:: 9.05am (EST) - Sandy Hook Elementary, Newtown, opens its doors to admit its 700 pupils

:: 9.30am  - Doors are locked ready for lessons to begin a short while later police receive a call for help

:: 9.40am - Local police report that a shooter is in the school office and call in state police

:: 10.30am - President Barack Obama told of the shootings

:: noon - Newtown United Methodist Church opens its doors to distressed locals

:: 1pm - Authorities give first press conference on the emergency

:: 2.40pm - US media reports that the gunman's parents are among the victims

:: 2.30pm - Incoming US Senator Chris Murphy arrives in the town

:: 3:15pm - President Obama brands the school shootings as a "heinous crime" and expresses "overwhelming grief'", orders flags at US diplomatic missions to be flown at half-mast

:: 3.30pm - Connecticut state Governor Dannel Malloy addresses the media

:: 3.40pm - Lieutenant Paul Vance confirms that the dead include 20 children, six adults, one gunman and another person at a "secondary scene" in Newtown

:: 3.45pm - Confirmation that the gunman is dead inside the school

:: 5pm  - Suspect shooter identified as Adam Lanza

:: 7.00pm - Police confirm gunman killed his mother at their home before travelling to the school and continuing his rampage

:: 8.00pm - Hundreds attend vigils in Newtown to those killed in the shootings
