Thousands of passengers are facing major travel disruption with no train services running in or out of London King's Cross due to overrunning engineering works.
East Coast Trains has confirmed they are expecting "significant disruption to services" due to delayed Network Rail works north of the station.
Passengers have been told to consider deferring their travel plans until Sunday or Monday.
The company said customers who need to travel should start or finish their journey at Finsbury Park in north London, with at least one change of train.
A reduced service to and from the station will go ahead as planned on Sunday, with trains leaving up to 20 minutes earlier than normal.
All trains to and from London King's Cross are expected to be cancelled
The disruption comes as thousands of people are likely to be travelling following the Christmas break.
East Coast spokesman Paul Emberley said: "Network Rail has apologised to passengers for the inevitable delays to their travel plans on Saturday as a result of the overrunning engineering works.
"East Coast is particularly sorry too for the inconvenience to its customers as a result, on what we know is an already very busy travel day immediately following the Christmas break.
"For customers intending to start or finish their journey at King's Cross, consideration should be given to deferring travel plans to either Sunday or Monday.
Network Rail said the engineering work is part of a £200m upgrade
"We're working hard over the holiday period to make the necessary adjustments to our timetable as a consequence, and to provide as much information as we can."
East Coast destinations include Peterborough, Leeds, Newcastle, Glasgow and Aberdeen.
Network Rail said the engineering work is part of a £200m Christmas investment programme.
The work is among 300 projects being undertaken over the holiday period at 2,000 locations across Britain.
A Network Rail spokesman said: "What has happened is really regrettable and unfortunate, but it is a small part of a massive amount of engineering investment taking place over Christmas."
Severe weather alerts have been issued across Britain with the Met Office warning of dangerous conditions caused by snowfall, heavy rain and extreme cold.
The Met Office says there is a 90% chance of severe cold, ice and snow in some areas of England between today and the New Year.
Yellow weather alerts are in place in the East Midlands, the West Midlands, London and the South East of England, Northern Ireland, Scotland's South West, Wales and across several other regions.
The cold weather alert issued by the Met Office warns conditions could "increase the health risks to vulnerable patients and disrupt the delivery of services".
The wild weather has already caused travel disruption on the roads and at UK airports.

Motorists were forced to abandon their vehicles after becoming stuck in snow in Sheffield.
Traffic was backed up on the Prince of Wales Road in the early hours of the morning with some motorists reporting four-hour tailbacks.
Liverpool's John Lennon Airport and Leeds Bradford International Airport in Yorkshire were forced to close their runways while snow was cleared.
Four flights into Liverpool from Malta, Berlin and Bucharest had to be diverted to Manchester Airport on Boxing Day.
A fifth flight from the Isle of Man returned to the island's airport as the Merseyside hub was closed for more than an hour while its runway was cleared.
A spokesman for John Lennon Airport said the airport has re-opened, but warned there may be further disruption.
"We have had quite a deluge here," he said.
A notice on the Leeds Bradford International Airport website said: "As a result of adverse weather conditions, Leeds Bradford International Airport is presently closed.
"We recommend you contact your airline or tour operator and check the status of your flight before arriving at the airport."
East Midlands Airport is also advising passengers to contact their airlines after disruptions to services.
Christmas night was the coldest of the year so far, with -8.5C recorded at Braemar in Aberdeenshire.

The Queen will use her Christmas message to pay tribute to medical staff who have volunteered to fight Ebola in west Africa, saying she has been "deeply touched" by their "selflessness".
Dozens of British doctors and nurses have travelled to countries like Sierra Leone to help combat the deadly epidemic.
In her Christmas message, which will be broadcast at 3pm, the Queen will say: "I have been deeply touched this year by the selflessness of aid workers and medical volunteers who have gone abroad to help victims of conflict or of diseases like Ebola, often at great personal risk."
The theme of this year's message is reconciliation and on the 100th anniversary of the Christmas Day truce in the World War One trenches, the Queen also touches on how she felt visiting the ceramic poppies at the Tower of London.
The monarch and the Duke of Edinburgh visited the installation by artist Paul Cummins in October.
She said: "The ceramic poppies at the Tower of London drew millions and the only possible reaction to walking among them was silence.
"For every poppy, a life - and a reminder of the grief of loved ones left behind."
A total of 888,246 ceramic poppies were planted in the moat at the Tower, one for each British and Commonwealth death.
The Queen recorded her message sitting next to a table featuring separate photographs of her grandparents, King George V and Queen Mary.
Also present is an embossed box similar to those sent to soldiers on the frontline in 1914.
The Queen made her first Christmas broadcast in 1952, live on the radio from her study at Sandringham.
Her first televised message came five years later and she has only missed one year, 1969, when she decided the royals had featured enough on TV after an unprecedented documentary.

The US has dismissed claims that Islamic State fighters shot down a Jordanian warplane before capturing its pilot.
IS supporters claimed the plane, which was flying with US-led coalition forces, was hit by a heat-seeking missile near Raqqa city in northern Syria.
Jordan initially said the F-16 fighter was shot down during a "military mission against the hideouts of the terrorist group" - but later said it was unclear how the plane came to crash.

Now the US Central Command has said: "Evidence clearly indicates that ISIL (IS) did not down the aircraft as the terrorist organisation is claiming."
A Washington official added that the allies were investigating whether the plane suffered a mechanical fault.

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has urged IS captors to treat the pilot "in accordance with international humanitarian law".

IS in Raqqa published photographs on jihadist websites purporting to show its fighters holding the captured pilot and showed a military card identifying him.
Several photographs were released, including one showing the captive, wearing only a white shirt, being carried from water by four men.
Another showed him on land, surrounded by about a dozen armed men.
The images were verified by two relatives contacted by the Reuters news agency, who said they had been notified by the head of the Jordanian air force that the pilot was First Lieutenant Muath al Kasaesbeh, aged 27.
The army separately confirmed his name.
A friend said Mr Kasaesbeh, who is from a prominent Jordanian family, was passionate about his mission and felt it was a religious duty to fight extremist groups such as IS that were "distorting the true spirit of Islam".
British Foreign Secretary Philip Hammond tweeted that he was "concerned" for the pilot.
Jordan is among a number of countries that have joined the US-led alliance carrying out airstrikes against IS after the jihadis seized large areas of Syria and Iraq.
Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Jordan and Bahrain are taking part in airstrikes alongside the US.

The six victims of the Glasgow lorry crash are to be remembered at a special church service today.
Three members of the same family were killed when a bin lorry careered out of control on a busy street on Monday afternoon, ploughing into crowds of Christmas shoppers.
The victims have been named as 18-year-old Erin McQuade and her grandparents Lorraine and John Sweeney, all from Dumbarton.
Primary school teacher Stephenie Tait, 29, and Jacqueline Morton, 51, from Glasgow and Gillian Ewing, 52, from Edinburgh were also killed.
Another 10 people, including the driver, were injured.

The driver and five others remain in hospital, with one patient said to be in a critical condition.
It is not yet clear what caused the driver, who has not been named, to lose control of the vehicle.
Witnesses reported seeing him slumped at the wheel as the lorry collided with pedestrians on Queen Street, before crashing into the side of the Millennium Hotel at George Square.
Hundreds of floral tributes have been laid at the site of the disaster.

Personal tributes from friends and relatives of the victims are also pouring in.
Headteacher of the Glasgow primary school where Ms Tait was a teacher, Catherine Gallagher, described her as "an excellent young teacher, dedicated to the children."
Mr Sweeney, meanwhile, was a former president of Bramalea Celtic supporters club in Canada.
The club released a statement expressing "great shock and sadness" about his death and the death of his wife and granddaughter.

Breaking News: Black Teen Shot Dead By Police In St Louis
Britain's retail sector is celebrating a record-breaking year as official figures are projecting an all-time high for sales in 2014.
The forecast from the Office of National Statistics shows that sales for the year are expected to reach £342bn - a £48bn increase since 2010.
Pre-Christmas sales are up by 5.2% compared with last year.
The Government says the High Street is fighting back with successes not limited to online retailers and big hitters.
Estimates from the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills indicate a record-breaking year for independent and small businesses with £72bn in turnover.
The Government says the High Street is fighting back
Britain's retail successes have been credited in part to national promotional days like Black Friday and Panic Saturday.
But small businesses have benefited too, with more than £500m being taken across the UK on 6 December, which was dubbed Small Business Saturday.
Video:The Year In Retail
Sky News spoke with Aylesbury residents Helen and Hannah Meade, a mother and daughter who have been taking advantage of Christmas bargains.
They explained how a modern Christmas is about putting money aside, about spending cleverly and shopping around for the best deal.
"We make a budget for each child," Hannah Meade said.
"And we save for four months ahead of Christmas. This year it's not too bad because I've put money aside to do some shopping for next year in the January sales."
Commenting on the retail figures, Business Minister Matthew Hancock said: "The return of the high street is fantastic news and goes to show that we are on course for prosperity."
Labour however has warned against complacency based on projections.
Video:Swipe - Technology In Retail
In a statement, the party said: "Britain's retail sector leads the world in innovation, supports thousands of jobs and we want to see it go from strength to strength.
"But sadly under the Tory-led government, across the board growth has been patchy, unbalanced and unsustainable, benefiting only those at the top."
Christmas debt is certainly a real issue for many. The latest figures from the Bank of England show that unsecured consumer loans, excluding student loans currently stand at £167.9bn.
Of that, credit card debt accounts for £60.83bn in October alone.
Mike O'Connor, chief executive of the debt charity StepChange, told Sky News: "Draw up a budget. How much money have you got coming in, how much can you afford to spend.
"And if you have still got a problem after your budget, you are in debt, go and talk to the people you owe money to, go and talk to the banks, the energy companies because they should help you."
A black teenager has been shot dead by a police officer in the same city where the killing of Michael Brown sparked global protests.
The 18-year-old was killed at a Mobil petrol station in the suburb of Berkeley in St Louis, Missouri, on Tuesday night.
Sergeant Brian Schellman, from St Louis County Police, said a police officer was conducting a routine business check at around 11.15pm when he saw two male subjects and approached them.
Police have formed a wall on the forecourt
Sgt Schellman said one of the men pulled out a handgun and pointed it at the officer.
The officer then fired several shots, striking and fatally wounding the suspect. He said the second suspect fled.
Video:Black Teen Shot Dead By US Police
Social media users have posted photos of crowds forming at the scene, where a police cordon has been set up around the forecourt.
Video, which is being live-streamed online, showed a wall of police officers at the service station and there are reports of clashes with members of the public.
The victim has been unofficially identified as Antonio Martin.
Mr Martin's mother Toni Martin told the St Louis Post-Dispatch that her son had been out with his girlfriend.
Vines were posted online showing Ms Martin crying "That's my baby" as she found out that the victim was her son.
A Twitter user called Jesus Christo, who uses the handle @DesJuanTheThug, appears to have been with Mr Martin when he was killed.
He tweeted: "I can't believe my best friend just died in front of me #AntonioMartin."
Berkeley is the neighbouring suburb to Ferguson where an unarmed Michael Brown was killed by police officer Darren Wilson on 9 August.
His death led to protests across the US and worldwide and a debate about the US police's use of force.

Arthritis sufferers have been offered fresh hope after patients were effectively cured using a revolutionary electronic implant.
Doctors used tiny pacemaker style devices embedded in the necks of patients with severe rheumatoid arthritis to "hack" into their nervous systems.
The implant - whose effects were exclusively demonstrated to Sky News - fires bursts of electrical impulses into a key nerve that relays brain signals to the body's vital organs.
Inflammation in patients' joints was reduced within days of implantation
Scientists who have been conducting a groundbreaking trial of the implant say "more than half" of the patients have found their condition has now dramatically improved.
More than 400,000 patients in the UK are affected by the disease.
Video:Arthritis Patient Effectively Cured
Researchers now believe the same technique - which can eliminate the need for patients to take drugs - could reverse other chronic conditions, including asthma, obesity and diabetes.
Sky News was given exclusive access to the study of 20 patients being carried out at the Academic Medical Centre in Amsterdam.
The findings are expected to be published in the New Year but already researchers say over 50% of them have shown significant improvement.
Professor Paul-Peter Tak, a rheumatologist at the hospital, said: "Even in patients who have failed everything, including the most modern pharmaceuticals, we have seen a clear trend of improvement.
"We may be able to achieve remission in 20% to 30% of patients, which would be a huge step forward in the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis."
Doctors hope the nerve stimulator could be widely used within 10 years. But they admit they don't yet fully understand how it has such a powerful effect.
The implant stimulates the vagus nerve, which connects the brain to the major organs and is responsible for many 'automatic' body functions such as breathing and heart rate.
By firing impulses for just three minutes a day, scientists were able to reduce the activity of the spleen, a key organ in the immune system.
Video:Human Nerve Hacking Explained
Within a matter of days the organ produced fewer chemicals and other immune cells that cause the abnormal inflammation in the joints of people with rheumatoid arthritis.
Monique Robroek had an implant fitted under her skin a year ago. She had been in so much pain that she struggled to walk across a room, despite taking the strongest possible arthritis drugs.
She has now stopped all medication and is totally pain free
"I have my normal life back," she said. "Within six weeks I felt no pain. The swelling has gone.
"I go biking, walk the dog and drive my car. It is like magic."
Ms Robroek holds a magnet over the device to switch it on.
Within seconds the altered nerve impulses cause her voice to tremble.
But scientists say they have not seen any other side effects from the treatment.
Video:Suit Simulates Pain Of Arthritis
"It is very appealing to patients because they do not want to take medicines for 30-40 years," said Prof Tak. "It's also restoring the natural balance in the body."
British pharmaceutical company GlaxoSmithKline believes the potential for bio-electronics is so great that it has invested $50m (£32m) in the technology.
It is already experimenting with next-generation smart devices the size of a grain of rice.
Kris Famm, who is leading the research, said the implants could prevent the airway spasms of asthma, control appetite in obesity, and restore normal insulin production in diabetes.
He said: "I hope that in 10-20 years if you or I had diabetes, we would go to the doctor and there is an option to introduce this sort of device onto the nerve that controls that balance.
"It becomes your treatment instead of insulin injections or pills."
:: The study at the Academic Medical Centre in Amsterdam has now been completed and patients are not currently being accepted for treatment.
North Korea's limited internet service collapsed for more than nine hours just days after the US vowed to retaliate for a cyber-attack on Sony, which has been blamed on the reclusive state.
A US-based analyst said all internet went down after a period of instability over the weekend before links were eventually restored.
"For the past 24 hours North Korea's connectivity to the outside world has been progressively getting degraded to the point now that they are totally offline," said Doug Madory, director of internet analysis at Dyn Research.
"There's either a benign explanation - their routers are perhaps having a software glitch; that's possible. It also seems possible that somebody can be directing some sort of an attack against them and they're having trouble staying online."
Sony pulled The Interview - a comedy about the assassination of North Korea's leader Kim Jong-Un - after hackers threatened showings of the movie.
Video:N Korea Currency Is 'Worthless'
The group, calling itself Guardians of Peace, had already leaked five unreleased films, the script of the next James Bond movie, embarrassing email exchanges between executives and private individuals' data after attacking Sony's systems.
Pyongyang has repeatedly denied any role in the attack but said it could have been carried out by the country's supporters.
But the FBI blamed North Korea for the devastating attack on the media giant and President Barack Obama said the US would respond "in a place and time and manner that we choose".
State Department spokeswoman Marie Harf said she could not confirm North Korea had been the target of a cyber-attack.
Video:Doubts Raised Over Hacking Claims
"We aren't going to discuss ... publicly, operational details about the possible response options or comment on those kind of reports in anyway except to say that as we implement our responses, some will be seen, some may not be seen," she said.
However, Ms Harf did respond to Pyongyang's calls for a joint investigation into the attack, saying: "If they want to help here they could admit their culpability and compensate Sony for the damages that they caused."
The internet is only available to trusted government officials in North Korea and its main web presence is through its Uriminzokkiri website, which has Twitter and Flickr feeds best known for sharing propaganda videos attacking the US and South Korea.
Mr Madory said the internet connection had historically been stable, but had come under attack in the past.

Police in Glasgow are investigating why a bin lorry crashed into a crowd of Christmas shoppers in the city centre killing six people.
The truck mounted the pavement outside the Gallery of Modern Art - hitting a group of people waiting to cross the road - carrying on for another 300 metres until it crashed into the Millennium Hotel.
The driver, who was said to be lucid when the vehicle finally stopped, was taken to hospital after the tragedy and it is believed he may have fallen ill at the wheel.
"We heard from eyewitnesses saying he wasn't looking around as the lorry was going across the pavement. He appeared to be slumped over the wheel," Sky's Gerard Tubb, reporting from Glasgow, said.
Seven other people are also being treated for their injuries in three hospitals in Glasgow.
Video:Aftermath Of The Crash
Chief Inspector Mark Sutherland from Police Scotland said on Monday night: "We are currently working with our other agencies to establish exactly what happened.
"It's important that we do a thorough investigation to establish the full circumstances.
"It's important that we take all the necessary steps to do it as quickly as we can so that we get the answers for the families and get their loved ones back to them as quick as we can."

Police Scotland has appealed to anyone who has photos or videos of the incident to send it to them at georgesquareincident@scotland.pnn.police.uk.

The gunman who shot dead two New York City police officers told passers-by to "watch what I'm going to do", moments before the attack.
Chief of Detectives Robert Boyce said witnesses recall Ismaaiyl Brinsley asking them to follow him on Instagram, before making the chilling warning.
Instagram posts attributed to Brinsley, 28, have been described as "very anti-police".
Brinsley shot the officers in the head before turning the gun on himself
One appears to threaten to carry out an attack in retaliation for the death of Eric Garner, who was killed in a New York officer's chokehold, sparking weeks of mass protests.
Part of the caption read: "I'm Putting Wings On Pigs Today. They Take 1 Of Ours ... Let's Take 2 of Theirs."

Eric Garner's family have condemned the killings, denouncing revenge attacks.
Joined by civil rights activist Reverend Al Sharpton, Mr Garner's mother Gwen Carr told reporters: "I'm standing here in sorrow about losing those two police officers, that was definitely not our agenda.
"We want you to not use Eric Garner's name for violence, because we are not about that."
A candlelight vigil was held for the two dead police officers on Sunday, a day after they were ambushed in their squad car while on patrol in the Bedford-Stuyvesant neighbourhood of Brooklyn.
They have been named as 32-year-old Liu Wenjin and 40-year-old Raphael Ramos.
Police have said Brinsley shot the pair in the head with "no warning, no provocation".

The suspect, named as Ismaaiyl Brinsley, 28, used a silver semi-automatic handgun. It is believed Brinsley had shot and seriously injured his ex-girlfriend earlier on Saturday
]]>
"They were quite simply assassinated," Police Commissioner William Bratton said.
Brinsley then ran inside a subway station and fatally shot himself in the head as responding officers pursued him.
Details have now emerged surrounding his long criminal record and apparent history of mental instability.
Brinsley shot and seriously injured his ex-girlfriend in Baltimore, Maryland, shortly before travelling to New York to carry out Saturday's attack.
He had at least 19 arrests in Georgia and Ohio and had spent two years in prison for gun possession.
Police said Brinsley's mother believed he had been suffering from an undiagnosed mental illness.

He also reportedly tried to kill himself last year.
The killings have sparked fears of further revenge attacks amid heightened nationwide tensions over the deaths of Mr Garner and another black male at the hands of white police officers.
The unarmed teen Michael Brown was shot dead in Ferguson, Missouri, back in August.
Decisions by US grand juries to not charge either of the officers involved triggered widespread protests.
New York police officers have been told to take extra backup when responding to radio calls and have been urged to wear bulletproof vests when out on the street.
On Sunday a police officer in Florida was shot and killed in what is believed to have been an unrelated incident.

Chief of Detectives Robert Boyce said witnesses recall Ismaaiyl Brinsley asking them to follow him on Instagram, before making the chilling warning.
Instagram posts attributed to Brinsley, 28, have been described as "very anti-police".

Breaking News: One Man Killed In City Centre Shooting
A burglary suspect has died after being shot by a Taser in Newcastle-under-Lyme.
Staffordshire Police had been called to a property after receiving reports of a burglary shortly after 1am on Monday morning. The occupants had left their house, leaving the man inside.
Officers discharged a Taser during the incident, but the suspected burglar became unresponsive after being taken to a police vehicle.
Paramedics from the West Midlands Ambulance Service tried to treat the man, but he died a short time later.
The incident has been referred to the Independent Police Complaints Commission.
"A detailed investigation is under way and the scene will remain cordoned off while the investigation continues. Local officers will be in the community throughout the day talking to residents," a spokesman for the force said.

Foreign students could be forced to leave the UK after their courses finish under tough new rules being considered by the Home Secretary, reports say.
Theresa May wants the Conservative party's next manifesto include a pledge to make non-European Union graduates return home and apply for a work visa from abroad if they want to continue living in Britain, according to The Sunday Times.
At the moment most students switch easily to a work visa from within the UK.
Under the proposal, universities and colleges would be fined and stripped of the right to sponsor foreign students if they fail to ensure that students left the UK.
A source close to the Home Secretary told the newspaper that Mrs May has warned the Prime Minister that failure to act on foreign students will make it impossible for him to hit his target of cutting net migration.

"Making sure immigrants leave Britain at the end of their visa is as important a part of running a fair and efficient immigration system as controlling who comes here in the first place," the source said.
"Theresa is pressing for the next Conservative manifesto to contain a policy that will make sure that anybody coming here on a student visa will have to leave the country in order to apply for a new visa of any kind.
"She wants to make the colleges and universities that sponsor foreign students responsible for ensuring their departure.
"And she wants to be able to fine colleges and universities with low departure rates and deprive the worst of them of their right to sponsor foreign students."

But senior Liberal Democrats warned Mrs May's plan could deprive the UK of highly-skilled graduates.
A senior Lib Dem source said it made "zero economic sense" and "such a blunt instrument would not get our support".
An aide to Deputy PM and Lib Dem leader Nick Clegg added: "We think it is a very bad idea to get rid of people who have spent years training to be physicists and computer programmers.
"We've invested a lot in these people and to turf them out for the sake of some figures doesn't make any sense."
Video:Labour's Immigration Pledges
Mrs May is also likely to face resistance from Chancellor George Osborne, who encouraged David Cameron to ditch quotas for immigrants in his recent speech on EU migration because it would hurt the economy.
Mr Cameron has insisted that only the Tories can offer "competence" on dealing with immigration.
Writing in the Daily Express on Saturday, Mr Cameron said his Government had addressed some of the problems inherited from a Labour administration that "let immigration get out of control".
"I came into office with a single-minded determination to turn all this around - and real progress has been made," he said.

"We put a cap on those coming here to work from outside the European Union - and we have seen the numbers fall significantly, close to levels last seen in the 1990s.
"Major work has been done to clamp down on the bogus 'colleges' that were really just a front for people to come here, with more than 800 of them shut down so far."
Official figures from the Office for National Statistics show that 121,000 non-EU students entered the UK in the year to June, but only 51,000 left, meaning 70,000 stayed behind in just one year, The Sunday Times says.
The business department has calculated that the number of foreign students coming to the UK will rise by more than 6% a year up to 2020.
A woman has been charged with the murder of eight children at a house in Cairns, northern Australia, police have said.
Mersane Warria, 37, is the mother of seven of the children, who had all been found stabbed to death. The eighth child was her niece.
The youngsters - four girls and four boys - were aged between two and 14 years, police said.
Warria was formally charged following a bedside hearing at Cairns Base Hospital where she appeared before a magistrate.
She remains under police guard in the hospital.
The children were found dead on Friday
Officers were called to the home in the suburb of Manoora on Friday morning after reports of a woman suffering from stab wounds.
The children's bodies were discovered during a search of the house.
Police have not said how the children died, but Queensland Police Detective Inspector Bruno Asnicar said they are examining several knives in the home that may have been the weapon used to kill them.
Suffocation was also a possible cause of death.
Det Ins Asnicar said: "We are considering that and that's why it's taking a bit of time.
"It could be a range of things, from suffocation to 1,000 other things."
Police are not looking for any other suspects.
Residents have held a church service, candlelit vigil and laid flowers and toys for the children outside the home.
The family were members of the Torres Strait Islander community, a group of indigenous Australians viewed as distinct from the broader Aboriginal community due to their origins on islands off the Queensland coast.
Prime Minister Tony Abbott described the deaths as "heartbreaking".
He added: "All parents would feel a gut-wrenching sadness at what has happened. This is an unspeakable crime.
"These are trying days for our country."
The deaths came as Australia was reeling from a deadly siege in a Sydney cafe.
Two New York City police officers have been killed by a lone gunman as they sat in their parked patrol car in mid-afternoon.
The pair were shot in the head in the Bedford-Stuyvesant neighbourhood of Brooklyn. Officials said they had been "ambushed and murdered".
The suspect has been named as Ismaaiyl Brinsley, who had posted an apparent warning on Facebook just hours earlier.
In the message, he wrote about shooting two "pigs" in revenge for the death of Eric Garner, who died after a New York police officer used a chokehold during an arrest, sparking nation-wide protests.

Police Commissioner William Bratton identified the two dead officers as Liu Wenjin, 32 and Raphael Ramos, 40.
He said they were shot and killed "with no warning, no provocation".
"They were quite simply assassinated," Mr Bratton said.
Mr Liu, a seven-year veteran who got married two months ago, and Mr Ramos, father to a 13-year-old son, were "ambushed and murdered", officials said.
An Instagram post that has been attributed to Brinsley
Mr Bratton added that Brinsley had published posts on Instagram that were "very anti-police".
Authorities have not confirmed the contents of the messages but an image has emerged of an Instagram post attributed to Brinsley.
Part of the caption reads: "I'm Putting Wings On Pigs Today. They Take 1 Of Ours ... Let's Take 2 of Theirs."
Brinsley shot and seriously injured his ex-girlfriend earlier on Saturday in Baltimore, Maryland, before travelling to New York.
The firearm police said was recovered on the subway platform
He fired through the passenger side of the officers' vehicle with a silver semi-automatic handgun just before 3pm local time (8pm UK time).
The 28-year-old then ran inside a subway station and fatally shot himself in the head as responding officers pursued him.
The shooting occurred around the same time New York police were receiving a warning fax from authorities in Baltimore.
President Barack Obama condemned the killings, saying there was no justification for them, while Attorney General Eric Holder called the deaths an "unspeakable act of barbarism".
Police officers line the route as vehicles containing the bodies pass by
One man who lives in the area, Derrick Thompson, said the shooting happened across from the Tompkins Houses public housing development.
"I was watching TV, and then I heard the helicopters," he said. "I walked out, and all of a sudden - this."
The shooting comes amid heightened tensions in New York and across the United States over police tactics following the death of Mr Garner and the shooting dead of Michael Brown in Missouri.
Several officers have been assaulted at protests in New York during demonstrations that have largely been peaceful.
Policemen at the scene of a shooting
Mr Bratton said they were looking at whether the suspect had attended any rallies or demonstrations.
The Reverend Al Sharpton, a civil rights leader who has supported the families of Mr Brown and Mr Garner, said Mr Garner's family has no connection to the suspect and denounced the shootings.
He said: "Any use of the names of Eric Garner and Michael Brown, in connection with any violence or killing of police, is reprehensible and against the pursuit of justice in both cases."
Mr Brown's family also condemned the shootings, saying in a statement they reject "any kind of violence directed toward members of law enforcement".
